Providers select it during NPPES enumeration and maintain it themselves, so it describes how the record is classified rather than a verified scope of practice. The registry matches taxonomy_description as a prefix, so a search for "Dentist" returns records classified "Dentist, General Practice" and similar. Each row shows the description the registry actually returned for that NPI.
How do I narrow this to one state?
Add a state to the same query. A state-only search is refused by the registry, but state plus taxonomy_description works, and the state links on this page open pages built on exactly that pairing.
Does this replace a credentialing check?
No. Registry taxonomy is classification, not licensure, credentialing, Medicare enrollment, or current practice authority, and it carries no federal exclusion status. Screen identifiers against the OIG LEIE separately.
